Coal is an organic mineral that can be burned, formed from ancient plant remaining precipitate which subsequently changed shape due to physical and chemical processes that take place over millions of years. Therefore, coal is included in the category of fossil fuels. The process that turns plants into coal had been called by pembatubaraan (coalification). Factors ancient plant species vary according to the geological age and location of growth and development, coupled with the location of deposition (sedimentation) plants, the influence of rock pressure and heat of the earth and geological changes that took place then, would lead to the formation of coal types vary . Therefore, the characteristics of the coal varies according to the field of coal (coal field) and layers (coal seam).
The process of initial formation of coal is, the plant turns into peat deposits (peat), which subsequently changed to lignite (lignite) or also called brown coal (brown coal). Young coal is coal with the kind of low organic maturity.
